The Lifeguard

Of course being a lifeguard had it has privileges. Every life-guard from the beginning of time it seems consistently had a girl. This had been this specific summer that defined the character I was to eventually become. To really know the career choice I made is to look back to how lifeguards have evolved over time.

When we talk of the development of life guards we have to return back to the turn of the 20th century at which hotels in places like Atlantic City and New Jersey have become mecas for tourists and beach goers. As more people flocked to the shores so did the number of incidences of water related injuries and many people drowned. By the early 1900s longer that 9,000 people drowned annually in the USA. It was becoming Lifeguard Training apparent that so as to prevent and lessen the quantity of water and deaths related injuries began the movement to teach people to guard against accidental drowning. Hence, the term life guard has been and is associated with people specifically trained in water rescue. One of the first was Duke Kahanamoku, who was one of Hawaii’s first original watermen, which introduced the rescue board between 1910 and 1915. It had been Captain Harry Sheffield of all South Africa who is credited with developing the first rescue float, which by the way is a variant of the initial that’s still used now.

But, it had been the YMCA who had introduced innovative swim guidelines for learning how to float that developed the National Lifesaving Service back in 1912. This was followed closely by the Red Cross in 1914. Both organizations now developed their own training programs created specifically to train individuals not only to show swimming but also to be designed to provide assistance and perform water imports. In order to become a lifeguard one needed to be a rather proficient swimmer to start with, but has been additionally been trained in lifesaving methods that entailed resuscitation. These coached individuals or life guards were responsible for supervising beaches and swimming pool facilities and also all other water related activities all around the united states.

At first that the lifeguard training apps primarily emphasized personal water safety: The way to prevent drowning and protect oneself in crises. Non swimming rescue procedures, like throwing a rope or a floating object to the individual in the sport, were encouraged. Life guards considered swimming rescues a last resort due to the hazard posed with a panicked swimmer in the water. Up until the mid 1970’s lifeguard training whether it was Red Cross or YMCA that the rigors of qualifying to be allowed to partake in classes to become certified as being a life-guard proved very intense. I recall the swim test I took just to make up for that class back from the early 1960’s. The swim check was almost too tough. Fortunately though I was an associate of the swim team other wise I would have passed gaining entrance into the program. That which we suffered for weeks of intensive training where we had to do water imports in virtually any number of circumstances without any floatation devises using just our cunning and strength was a miracle that none of us never turned into victims ourselves.

This was this training back then prepared me to get a livelihood not just for swimming pool supervision but also for open water rescues as well. While I look in a regular pool lifeguard now around the united states I’m amazed at the dearth of swimming proficiency that nearly all of today’s pool life guards have. But then I consider the lifeguards say, in Australia where their beach guards are astounding in their own quick reaction so many contingencies whether individuals are captured in rip tides or exposed to too much sun highlight the rigorous training that they continue to go through.

But, back in the summer of ’66 my tenure as the life guard was pretty much event totally as a result of my pragmatic whistle and fast assessment of individuals entering and outside of this water. It had been the practice I received back then prepared me to the job at hand that enable me to have a secure and almost event free summer. I was never a real macho type however as a life guard did offer a few rewards. People looked up into the life guard because they are the ones that are there to protect their safety while at a swimming or swimming pool. I had been not any different.

It was during that summer that I realized my calling so of speaking with what I was destined to complete. Since my father took me into the older Irving Park Y ago once I was little exposed me into the terrific universe of aquatics. Later, I developed a true comprehension and proficiency that allowed be to thrive within an environment when others might not. Through-out the years many new innovations and methods have contributed to saving more lives attended together. We had to go through rigorous training to keep fit and to upgrade on the latest techniques for saving and resuscitation. Consistently at the back of our mind was, will I be very tested when a real emergency happens? I have seen it happen on several occasions each time a fellow life guard just freezes at the precise moment he needs to have jumped to action. Even with all that training there are people who just can not handle a true live and passing situation as it actually does occur. It happens all the time.

As the years few by I had been always amazed at the technology being introduced for life saving. What we used and were competed in back from the 60’s by the 90’s was seems unreliable. The devises such as the rescue float has been redesigned and so the every life guard now is assigned you to use just incase they were called into actions.
